But don't take your eyes off the road. . .
You took my heart
And gave it a home
We made it through the aching parts
And I gave you my soul
Oh we tried to kill the pain
And heal these scars
But now love has had its say
And we're moving apart
I came across this song purely by accident.
I was watching Jay Z's instalment of "My next guest needs no introduction" with David Letterman and this song was featured in Shangri La Studios recording. Dave was really surprised when she went to go and record the vocal that she stayed seated where she was where they had only just chatted a few minutes earlier. I think sometimes you can forget as a performer how enthralled people can become when they see you perform for the first time or see you in your element. They can never truly understand what goes on in your head when that happens. It just isn't meant to be understood.
Apart from David having a heart to heart with Jay Z about infidelity, that didn't say much, but said it all, all at once, this was the most memorable part of the discussion.
Well we're chasing time
Gotta find peace of mind
And understand that
Baby we never can
Are you chasing time?
Time can get away from you, completely run away because you let it elude you.
Time can get away from you, because you didn't know how to cope with it when it started to slip.
Peace of mind is never really easy to find if there are people or obstacles that continue to keep your mind in a constant of chaos. So what are you supposed to do? Sometimes the best answer is to not do anything at all. The very things that you know you can never do again is the best solution for questions that can never be asked. Sometimes when you raise issues that need to be discussed, you still get the answers that come to you, but knowing them doesn't make things any easier either.
Keep me in your mirror
But don't take your eyes off the road
Holding on won't get us any nearer
Cuz we got a long way to go
Sometimes it's hard to see
That some things just won't be
Are you being kept in someone's mirror?
You have to question whether it's a rear view mirror that they catch glimpses of you in, or it's a mirror that they stand in front of and even when they're looking at themselves, getting ready for their day, all they see and feel is you. That's completely natural. It might be some sense of guilt that they can never voice that keeps you in their mirror. There is a mission that we must follow in life that may take us far away from the tried and true, from all that we have ever known. The unknown is a great place to be, because before too long, what was once unknown becomes unknown. So don't fret for too long and don't panic. Sometimes we are not meant to make sense of what happens, but just trust that we have the patience and the foresight to hold on when we need to, and let go when we need to.
Now we both know
But we act so unaware
It just goes to show
Our love isn't fair
Tomorrow's never promised
Only yesterday's a guarantee
And if I'm being honest (yeah baby)
That's the only thing that carries me
Why is love never fair?
Too often we are with people we don't want to be with.
Too often we are alone when we are meant to be together.
Too often we are with people who make us want to be alone.
Too often we are with friends when we want to be with strangers.
Should we be looking much more carefully at what makes us act so unaware, so oblivious to what our actions are, to how often we are watched when we don't want to be. If you are someone that people can rarely forget, why are you upset about that? Just know that you should know for yourself, what carries you, what sustains you, and who is there for you no matter what season you are in.
Now we're out of time
We gotta find peace of mind
And understand that
Maybe we never can
Why are we out of time?
Maybe we are just never in time.
There are too many other things to consider. There are too many times when you have given your all and nobody really notices. You get mad when you give your all and people don't really take notice or appreciate. They don't understand the nature of reciprocity. They keep their distance when they never afforded you the same courtesy. Yet when things aren't what they seem, they can't handle and quickly make their exit. It's nothing to worry about. You always knew that you would be able to survive anything that comes your way, it's how you were built. People forget that just because you're strong, it doesn't mean that you always want to be. It's all been borne out of necessity, not by choice.
Keep me in your mirror
But don't take your eyes off the road
Holding on won't get us any nearer
Cuz we got a long way to go
Sometimes it's hard to see
That some things just won't be
I hope that when you go to look in the mirror that you keep whoever needs to be there, in there.
There are so many reflections on the past that you feel are slipping away.
People might not be coping as well as you think they are, so be kind to others - more than usual.
It is very easy to be swept up in your own first world problems, that you only realise how other people are faring worse off, that you realise that you don't actually have any problems. We always get told that there are people who are in more dire need than ourselves. But then we are also told to count the blessings we have so that we can appreciate what little we do have.
If you are finding it hard to see, just remember that no matter how hard things get, you have to keep your eyes open and be prepared to see what's in front of you, even when things hurt. So even if you don't know exactly where you're going and where you will end up, keep me in your mirror, but don't take your eyes off the road. . .
