And there 'ain't nothin' you can't do. . .
You're the future and you've come for what's yours
The hidden treasure, locked behind the hidden doors
And the promise of a day that's shiny new
Only a dreamer could afford this point of view
But you're a driver not a passenger in life
And if you're ready you won't have to try 'cause
I wish I had known this song when it first released. It would have saved me so much time and energy! But when you discover gems of songs, it always happens when you least expect and it comes at exactly the right time. This song has been on repeat since last week and I've been waiting for the right time to blog about it. Siedah Garrett is a prolific songwriter and performer. I first fell in love with her singing when she featured on I just can't stop loving you with Michael Jackson. I had no idea that she was in the Brand New Heavies, a band I loved for their Midnight at the Oasis. Sometimes we have a dream so big that we think it can't possibly come true, or we doubt that the dream is worth having. I say, banish those negative thoughts from your mind. Don't lose sight of why you were born and what you came here to achieve. We never know when - just know that it will!
You are the Universe
And there 'ain't nothin' you can't do
If you conceive it, you can achieve it
That's why I believe in you, yes I do
Do you deny that you are the Universe? We never know how much we can achieve if we focus too much on everything else around us. I'm not saying that we need to be conceited about who we are. But there are enough obstacles and pitfalls in life without adding ourselves to that mix. I strongly believe that nobody can tell you want you can't do, what you can't achieve. They don't know what you are capable of when you are able to dig deep and show them just how wrong they are about you. If I believed every naysayer who said I wouldn't amount to anything, that I would achieve half of the things that I have set out to do, I wouldn't know how to value myself, I wouldn't know how much value I would be to others who need me the most. So can you believe that of yourself too? It doesn't even matter where in your life you think you are stuck. Focus more on solutions rather than the problem. There will always be challenges that come your way, you just have to figure out how to navigate your way every. single. time. Because of the type of person you, trouble will follow you. We just don't let it lead us.
You're a winner so do what you came here for
The secret weapon isn't secret anymore
You're a driver never passenger in life
And when you're ready you won't have to try 'cause
There are not enough people around me who think they are winners. I have always attracted people who like to share their problems with me. I don't mind that. Granted there are people who do the same for me and they don't know that they are a vital part of my support network of friends and family. Do you feel that you are struggling to win at life? We need to be conscious of what we can do and how we can get to where we want to be. I have always been quite transparent about how I think and I've made no bones about what I think is important for everyone, for the greater good. The irony is that I don't drive a car, but I've often been relied upon to drive key projects or activities in life. This is only because I have a vision and the aptitude to see things that others can't see. At times this can be extremely frustrating because being the only person with vision, it can be hard to explain or it can mean that you have to lead the project alone until people understand what you're trying to do.
You are the Universe
And there 'ain't nothin' you can't do
If you conceive it, you can achieve it
That's why I believe in you, yes I do
The same can be said for when I believe in others and they can't believe in themselves. Why does this happen? Why do we doubt ourselves and believe that there is nothing that we can achieve? Is it because for too long we have surrounded ourselves with people who have tried to dim our light? Is it because we haven't been given opportunities to shine our light because other people don't want to see you shine? Is it because we have so little self-belief that we don't know what it feels like to shine? If you're the type of person to dim your light so others can shine, think again. You are doing yourself and the world no favours by hiding yourself. If you think, if you feel, if you know that you have a brilliant idea that can benefit others, help others and make the world a better place - why would you deny us that? Do what you came here and change the world, make a difference in the world that you were born to make.
Yes I do
Believe in you
I do
The bass solo that follows this is my favourite part of the song. Don't get me wrong, I love Siedah's voice, but there's just something about that funky bassline that is music to my ears. I guess I imagine that's how heartbeats sound. Corny right? Shut up lol. I think if you're having a bad day, this is the song that you play to snap you out of it, or even better, this is the song that you play to start your day off right. Probably the greatest gift I have ever been able to give students as a teacher is an ability for them to foster their own self-belief. I don't know what your thoughts are, but it is extremely important for you to use your words to build life into people. Teaching taught me to believe that and to believe that of others. Pretty soon I could see that it wasn't only students that needed that, but also the adults who stood in front of them on a daily basis, who needed it too. I am extremely grateful for my teacher friends and students I have had the privilege to teach along the way. I can only hope that they are living the lives they have always wanted in their own worlds. All you need to know is that you're a driver never passenger in life, and when you're ready you won't have to try 'cause. . .
