Closer. . .

I was cruising down the street with my head in the sky
Going nowhere fast trying to stay high oh, oh
Windows down my arms are waving
Oh Lord I can't feel ma face no no, no no, aye,
Sister please won't you sing for me
Sing a song to set us free, free
Brother please won't you sing for me
Sing a song to set us free, free

The original version of this song is upbeat. I prefer this acoustic version as it resonates more with me, something about it going deep down in my soul (or it could just be the piano accompaniment). We might think we are heading nowhere fast because we keep comparing ourselves to our peers, our contemporaries and the timeline that we set for ourselves to complete all of our dreams and goals. We forget that life happens and things outside of our control, start to take control - and this is where the real work begins within ourselves - whether we have the right support systems of brothers and sisters to sing us songs of freedom - what can we collectively do together?

Say oh, everybody get a little closer
Baby say oh, everybody get a little closer

You might be having conversations with people who want to continually improve themselves, or even try to improve you. Do you want to be improved? Do you recognise the things about you that should be improved? Everyone wants to change something about themselves, some just won't admit to it. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be open to others getting a little closer? You might have allowed people to get close to you in the past, but then you got burned. Have you managed to be able to be vulnerable again? Have you learned to trust again? I guess only time will tell when you are able to be together with everyone who respect who you are and what you need to do in the space you are in.

I was looking for a diamond in the rough
Found nothing but the strangest kind of love no no no no
Searching hard through sweet temptation
Oh Lord I can't feel ma face no no ooh yeah
Sister won't you sing for me
Sing a song to set us free, free
Brother won't you sing for me
Sing a song to set us free, free

Have you come across some strange love? We don't often recognise when love pops up. You never know where you will find it and you don't know what to do with it at the best of times, when it arrives on your doorstep. What sweet temptations have you been forced to try and avoid? If we are ever tempted, it is because we lack the resolve to resist. So when our resolve starts to wane, what do we do? Do we give in, or continue to deny ourselves? When you are able to come to terms with your own decisions in this regard, it is another step closer to you being where you need to be.

Say oh, everybody get a little closer
Baby say oh, everybody get a little closer

Sometimes you can choose who can get a little closer, sometimes you can't. One thing that this year has taught the world is to try and come together, despite this global pandemic. I wonder about the state of affairs in America and hope that they will be able to get the right care to everyone who needs it. The politicisation of the pandemic has cost the lives of many and a second term for Donald Trump (among other things that I won't list here). How can we convince people to come a little closer if they are not sure whether they need to come together? How can we do this safely and with as little disruption as possible?

Cos love love love love love is all that we need
Is all that we need
Cos love love love love love is all that we need
Is all that we need
Cos love love love love love is all that we need
Is all that we need

Wherever we can, cherish the love that you receive. With people who truly have your best interests at heart, learn how well to nurture, foster and cultivate those partnerships so that they will be a part of your life. How are you making connections with people who deserve love? How are you ensuring that you find time to lavish love on yourself, on your own terms? Learn how to recognise when love is needed. Learn how to recognise when you need to step away and be loved for yourself. Love what you do in life, what you work in, your passion, make all of the things that you love part of your daily existence.

I said oh, everybody get a little closer
Cos love love love love love

I hope that you start to feel some respite soon. All of the aches and pains that seem to creep into your long hours into the nights, the bleeding into days that seem to all roll into one - know that these too shall soon pass.  I can't tell you how much longer that you need to hold on, just know that you need to keep holding on. Coming up with creative ways to keep connected with others is key to keeping life interesting, keeping those you love in the loop and honouring what you bring to the lives of others, even if they can't see it or appreciate it. If all we need is love - why aren't all of our problems solved? I guess we just need to keep working at it, and just get a little closer. . . .

To be loved by you. . .

To be loved by you is like a breeze Like the summer rain falling through the trees Like the waves that's crashing on the seas, it's easy To be loved by you is like a song Playing in your head you can dance along Like running away with the dawn, it's easy Like flowers bloom, Like my love for you It's been a long time between blog posts. So much has happened since I last reflected about life around me through music. If you have read my blog posts before, then you would know that you are meant to play the YouTube clip (see below) while you read.  I stumbled across this new song that was released today. It's Anzac Day in Aotearoa New Zealand so it's also an opportune time to reflect on the service of our countrymen for peace in previous wars. There is something oddly familiar and comforting about this melody, this song. The whole vibe drew me in and I've always been a huge Emily King fan. Are you currently with someone who helps you feel this way? What is it lik...

Masterpiece (Mona Lisa). . .

My eyes ain't used to these rays I'm feeling exposed but I hide no more I can't hide As the sun shines on all of my glory My flaws don't look so bad at all What was I so afraid of? No matter how hard you try to hide, or try to be inconspicuous, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. Trying to be lowkey when you are on high profile horizons is ridiculous. When your skills, gifts and talents thrust you into the spotlight, you know that you have a responsibility to do your best at all times, because it is no longer about you - it is about who you represent. You might be afraid that your failures and trauma, including your human flaws will all be on display for the world to see - but who has not lived an imperfect life? Why are we afraid of being exposed? Society teaches us to conform and be uniform. Sometimes all we need to do is insist on being comfortable with all our decisions, no matter where they lead us or where we were placed - because our flaws aren't as...
